Ice Hockey

Ice hockey, game between two teams, each usually having six players(each team can have a maximum number of 20 players), who wear skates and compete on an ice rink. The object is to propel a vulcanized rubber disk, the puck, past a goal line and into a net guarded by a goaltender, or goalie. With its speed and its frequent physical contact, ice hockey has become one of the most popular of international sports. The game is an Olympic sport, and worldwide there are more than a million registered players performing regularly in leagues. The origins of ice hockey date back to the 19th century in Canada where adaptations of the modern day hockey game were played in icy conditions. It is perhaps Canada’s most popular game.

Rules

The game starts in the centre circle with a face off. This is where the referee drops the puck in between two opposing players who then scrap to win position for their team. A faceoff may also be used to resume play after a stoppage in any of the attacking or defending face off zones.

The game is divided into three periods of 20 minutes playing time each, with a 15-minute intermission between periods. The clock is stopped every time play stops-which means every second is crucial! Hockey games may end in a tie unless the rules stipulate an overtime period to serve as a tiebreaker. To win a game one team must score more goals than their opponents.

Playing zones in hockey

The ice is marked with a series of red and blue lines. The red (center) line divides the ice into two halves, while the blue lines separate the ice into three equal ‘zones’: a defending zone, a neutral zone and an attacking zone.

Hockey field

If an attacking player enters the opposition’s defending zone (marked by the blue line) ahead of the puck, then he or she will be called offside. If this happens, play will be halted and a face-off will take place in the neutral zone.

Icing refers to a player striking the puck from his or her own half past the opposing team’s goal line without it deflecting off or coming into contact with another player (including a goalkeeper). If this happens, play will be halted and the puck will be returned to where the pass originated without a goal being given.
